Kerry Washington is once again at the helm of a high profile scandal but this time it’s as Anita Hill, the attorney who made headlines when she accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee, Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment. Confirmation is a television film about the drama surrounding the Supreme Court nomination hearings of Clarence Thomas after Hill went public with her claims. Along with Kerry Washington (Scandal), the movie stars Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as Clarence Thomas and Jennifer Hudson (Sex in the City II) as Angela Wright, one of the women who gave a statement in support of Hill’s allegations. Actress, Kristen Ariza will portray the role of Judy Smith “The Real Olivia Pope” who was hired by Clarence Thomas to advise him during this political crisis. Ironically, Kerry Washington plays Olivia Pope on ABC’s Scandal, a character that is loosely based on the life of Judy Smith.
When the news hit back in 1991, it was a media blitz and there wasn’t a network on air that didn’t cover the trials. America watched as an all-star political lineup of the good old boys club drug Anita Hill through the mud for daring to speak out against a powerful man just as he was approaching the pinnacle of his career. Twenty-five years later the drama is being retold on the small screen for a whole new generation to experience. If anyone can capture the degradation that this woman suffered in addition to the onslaught of doubt and accusations of deceit meant to destroy her credibility during those court hearings it’s the incomparable Kerry Washington. I'm sure her performance will be nothing less than brilliant. However; if history repeats itself Wendell Pierce is in line for an Emmy. It seems that every male co-star of Washington’s wins critical acclaim, just as Jamie Fox did in Ray and later Forest Whitaker in The King of Scotland. She just maybe a gladiator after all. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the drama unfold once again on the hill. The political drama will air Sat., April 16, 2016 on HBO.
